We are Artwave & this is our story

We started ARTWAVE in March 2023 with a simple goal: to create a space where anyone could explore their creativity, slow down, and make art without feeling intimidated. Officially opening our doors on 29 July 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa, we’ve grown into a female-owned creative studio that thrives on community, connection, and hands-on art experiences.

Our journey began from a background in Architectural design, love for art and a curiosity for trying new creative mediums. We noticed that many people wanted to paint, craft, or experiment with art but often felt unsure of where to start. That’s why we created ARTWAVE: a place where beginners and experienced creatives alike can learn, create, and enjoy the process together.

We run guided art workshops, including textured art, tote bag painting, canvas painting, and punch needle workshops, designed to make learning techniques approachable, fun, and social. What started as small workshops quickly became weekend destinations for individuals, friends, and families seeking something different to do in Johannesburg.

As our community grew, we introduced the ARTWAVE Art Café, a unique concept that works like a café or restaurant; except here, you order art instead of food. Guests can stop by, pick an activity from our creative menu, and spend a few hours painting, sketching, or crafting at their own pace. It’s our way of making creativity part of everyday life and giving people a place to unwind and express themselves.

We also bring creativity to private and corporate events, including mobile workshops that come to you. Over the past years, we’ve had the privilege of working with some local banks across South Africa and supporting community initiatives, like events for Pink Lady breast cancer awareness. These experiences remind us every day that art can connect people, spark conversation, and make a difference.

Throughout the year, we host special limited events for occasions like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Wine & Create nights, perfume-making workshops, flower arranging, and skull painting. These one-off sessions are designed to be memorable, hands-on, and inspiring. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a weekend creative escape.

Today, we continue to grow as a friendly community hub where you can stop by on a free afternoon, try something new, and leave with something beautiful that you made yourself. At ARTWAVE, we believe art isn’t about being perfect — it’s about exploring, connecting, and creating together.
